Cheese straws are easy and delicious. They’re the perfect appetizer for your next party and are easily made with frozen puff pastry. If you’ve never worked with frozen puff pastry, it’s easy to work with. The hardest part is remembering to take it out of the freezer 45 minutes before you want to work on it!
- 1 teaspoon Chipotle pepper powder
- 1 teaspoon Cumin
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 3 slices Crispy and Crumbled Cooked Bacon
- ⅔ cups Grated parmesan
- ½ cups grated cheddar cheese
- 1 Sheet of frozen puff pastry, thawed
- 1 beaten egg
In a small bowl, combine chili powder, cumin, onion powder and garlic powder. Add the cooked bacon, parmesan and cheddar cheese to a bowl and toss to coat well.
Lightly flour the rolling area and roll out the puff pastry into a 12 x 16 inch rectangle. Brush the dough with beaten egg and sprinkle with 1/2 of the spice-bacon-cheese mixture. Fold in half, creating a 12 x 8 inch rectangle. Roll the square into a 12 x 16 inch rectangle. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle the rest of the spice-bacon-cheese mixture on top.
Cut the rectangle in half to create two 12 x 8 inch rectangles. Cut each rectangle into 3/4 inch strips lengthwise. After cutting the two rectangles, you will have 32 strips approximately 8 inches long.
Place the strips on baking sheets lined with parchment paper, a few inches apart. Twist the ends of the strips to create a spiral. Refrigerate for about 30 minutes.
Bake at 400ºF for 12 to 14 minutes or until crisp and golden. Let cool 5 minutes before removing from cookie sheets.
