This delicious Apple Brown Betty recipe brings crunchy sweet apples with a twist of lemon with a cinnamon nutmeg crunch topping. For the ultimate in comfort food, top with natural vanilla ice cream or hot caramel sauce.

Ingredients

  • 5 Peeled, cored and sliced ​​Honeycrisp apples (see notes)
  • 1 Lemon, juice (about 2 tablespoons)
  • ¾ cups All purpose flour
  • ⅔ cups brown sugar
  • ⅓ cups Sugar
  • 1-½ tsp Ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoons Ground nutmeg
  • ⅛ teaspoons Ground clove
  • ⅛ teaspoons Salt
  • ½ Butter, Cold

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Spray the bottom of a 9-inch pan with nonstick cooking spray.

Toss the apples with the lemon juice and place them in the bottom of a 9-inch casserole dish or a 9-inch pie dish.

In a food processor, combine the flour, brown sugar, sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground cloves and salt. Pulse several times to combine. Add 1 tablespoon of butter at a time, pulsing between each tablespoon or until butter is fully incorporated.

Crumble over apples. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until very lightly browned. Serve hot.

Note: Other apple choices include Braeburn, Granny Smith, and Pink Lady.
